Corporate social responsibility starts with occupational safety and health

Infraserv Höchst offers new "blended learning" product – Customers save time and money

There is a growing awareness that managers have to plan in decades, and not just quarter-to-quarter; that some assets cannot be quantified in dollars and cents; and that sustainability and community responsibility are essential for success in business. This viewpoint, also called "corporate social responsibility", covers many more fields. Take plant safety and occupational safety and health: They are both closely tied to social responsibility and require a highly trained workforce. To help companies face the challenge of minimizing training costs and time without compromising on quality, Infraserv Höchst has developed a new educational product. Called "blended learning", it brings together the best of e-learning and face-to-face training, giving customers every possible combination of the two methods. More information about this highly versatile product offering is available at www.blendedlearning-arbeitsschutz.de.

Individual variability

Anything is possible with blended learning – from 100% e-learning to 100% face-to-face classes. The customers decide for themselves how best to integrate the training courses into their companies' processes. One thing is certain: Blended learning offers no-worries regulatory compliance. Whatever option the customer may choose, blended learning is a fully recognized, legally compliant qualification method for ensuring plant safety and occupational safety and health.

And that goes for many different fields. Over eleven million people in Germany have jobs that expose them to hazards directly or indirectly. Miners and nurses, chemical laboratory assistants and truck drivers, metalsmiths and fishermen – they all have to follow innumerable safety rules every day, stay abreast of highly fluid regulations and regularly attend safety-awareness courses. And it is not just about working with hazardous materials or wearing personal protective equipment. Occupational safety begins with how you adjust your monitor at your desk. Taking appropriate action in time can help reduce absenteeism due to sickness and raise employee morale – occupational safety is a factor for success.

Flexible and compliant

Expensive, drawn-out training courses are especially difficult for small and medium-sized firms since they tie up personnel and interrupt normal operations. However, major corporations also prefer to avoid the hefty costs of sending employees off to training seminars. This is where blended learning shines: Employees can complete the training courses on their own schedule, at their own desks, without interrupting crucial business operations. And while support is provided electronically, it is still tailored to each student. The courses are accredited, so employers do not have to worry about presenting the legally mandated certificates of completion. In fact, it takes one keystroke to issue fully compliant documents with names, dates of attendance and course contents, eliminating all the time otherwise spent manually preparing the documentation. Face-to-face classes – always a sticking point since employees are not at their workplaces – can be spaced even further apart. Yet another benefit of blended learning: Content can be adapted and individualized so students are specifically trained to handle their company's unique operational requirements. The software can even be adapted to the customer's layout and can run on the customer's servers.

Infraserv Höchst: plant safety and OSH are its stock-in-trade

Infraserv Höchst has a wealth of experience in plant safety and occupational safety and health. First, it operates a 4.6-square-kilometer industrial park near Frankfurt where 90 corporate tenants are located and some 22,000 people come to work every day. Since Infraserv Höchst runs all the site infrastructure itself, it has first-hand experience with regulatory safety compliance. Second, it is a leading industrial-service provider for chemical and pharmaceutical companies. It supplies customers in and outside the park with high-quality services in plant safety and occupational safety and health – from consulting and training to providing consultant safety advisors for clients. Finally, its subsidiary Provadis is Hesse's largest educational-service provider with extensive expertise in continuing education and a host of new e-learning programs that are extremely popular among its 400 international customers. And so by combining both approaches – e-learning and face-to-face training for plant safety and occupational safety and health – Infraserv Höchst has developed a new blended-learning program.

In short: Blended learning means greater safety and more legal certainty for less money in less time. Together, Infraserv Höchst and Provadis have developed an innovative training program that can often be used instead of or in addition to conventional seminars for safety engineers, plant managers and team leaders.
